Summer Update!!

Hello to the world !!
I haven’t updated this page for months…

I thought I would let everyone know what I have been up to this summer before it actually ends!!

The biggest event of this summer for me was the internship with one of the Publich Accounting firms.
I was staying in Bridgeport, CT, and working in Stamford, CT for about 2 months.
I was assigned to the Auditing practice of the company.
If you are not Accounting major or Business major, it might be a little tough to know what Auditing is…
Basically, Auditors from Public Accounting firms are sent to companies and they make sure their financial recordings and statements are correct.
(Still sounds a little complicated. and I’m sorry for some jargons…)

Anyways, I was working on several engagement teams and got to see a little bit of what the Auditing job is like!
One of the first things that came up to my mind through this internship was that a lot of things I learned in my Accounting and Finance courses are the basics of what they do on the job.
I am not quite sure if this applies to other jobs, but for this Auditing work, a lot of concepts and ideas we went over in classes are something that you are supposed to know when you start.
That being said, my supervisors explained more advanced and specific concepts or methods that I needed on this Auditing work, even though the amount of information was somewhat limited, because of the limited time of the summer.

What was very cool was when I could really understand how one piece of information was related to another chunk of information, based on the knowledge from college business courses.
And also that’s when I felt doing ‘actual’ work is very interesting and that experience made me want to see a lot more on the job.

I was assisting my staffs and seniors (they are my supervisors) on the Auditing procedure and they often gave me some basic works that I need to be responsible for.
Since I was still an intern, and was not capable enough to take a lot of responsibilities, I felt it was a little difficult to see the whole picture of the entire engagement work.
But still it was great to have a chance to see the work environment and actually get involved with the job, especially when you are trying to figure out what you want to do in the future and what some jobs are actually like.
That’t the general feedback of mine out of this internship experience.

And, actually there was another amazing piece in this internship, other than the job itself, and this was one of the coolest experiences I had this summer.
At the very end of the intership, the firm sent all the interns of the company down to Orlando, FL, for the International Intern Leadership Conference, which is the conference that the company holds every year exclusively for the company’s interns from the offices all over the world!!
Literally, there were people from all over the country and bunch of other countries as well.
And the number of the people was just incredible…about 1,700 interns and 200 staffs… We took over about 90% of the hotel where we were all staying…

Throughout the conference, the executives (i.g. Global CEO, leaders/directors of different kinds of practices within the firm) gave presentations, based on their experience with the company, during our dinner/breakfast times.
Also, we had a chance to work on team-based activities to experience and develop leadership/communication skills, and to attend several presentations regarding emerging issues or topics in the current business world.

Not only attending those events/presentations, but meeting more and more new people from the same firm but different offices was simply an amazing experience.
Each intern had his/her own story about their internship experience, and listening to them was such a valuable experience, becuse you can compare what you did to what other people did and also you can get more information about other offices or practices as well.
I really felt it was simply a great opportunity to see the dynamics of the people in the company…

So, that’s the generalized version of my summer internship experience.
(Because of the limited space, I guess I shouldn’t write about every little piece of my experience.)

We wrapped up the internship on this past Monday, August 7th.
And actually, I am back home in Japan now!!
The day after I finished my internship, I took a flight from JFK to Tokyo, Japan, and got home onWednesday, August 9th.
Now it might be a little too late, but I am trying to enjoy the rest of the summer break, catching up with fmily and bunch of friends from home!!

I hope the summer has been a great time for everybody.

And I am looking forward to seeing a lot of readers of this website on campus in the fall semester!!!

Ha Ha Ha Bless Your Soul!!

Wow… this summer seems to have come and gone. It feels like a week ago that I was waking up at 7 am and getting ready to go to breakfast with SOAR ‘06 for an exciting day of training. I can’t believe that orientation is over and I will never again be an OL… tear. But it truley was an amazing summer. I was blessed to work with 13 other fantastic leaders and role-models for the class of 2010 and wonderful supervisors who motivated all of us to do the best job possible every day. And the greatest part of orientation is the fabulous students that I was able to meet each and every week. The OL job is by far the most challenging thing I have ever taken on but it surpasses everything else in the benefits. I can’t wait for August 24th when all of the students will be returning. Hopefully, they are all looking forward to starting the best four years of their lives. It sounds funny but this is one day that I look forward to the most. I remember last year and how excited everyone seemed to be back and reunited with the groups, and how excited I was to see everyone. I had five wonderful groups of students with lots of laughs, lip syncs, non-winning pictures and lots of jumbaliaya. My NewsTeam, my Team 2, my Pickles, my dIMES, and my Southside Loops made my summer such a memorable one. And of course, the OLs :from listening to LeAnner play donkey kong in my room, to snapping fingers, to china buf and of course swimming in forbidden waters, I am so grateful to every single one of them.
So now comes and new and exciting year which I am getting more and more anxious about everyday. I’m going to be a Resident Assistant in Esopus hall and I feel like I am counting down the days now until it begins. I’ll be working with FYI and I am so happy about that. It is such a great program that you can get so much out of. I am soooo extatic about my staff and my 2nd floor RM and my CDA and RD and the kickin’ residents that are coming in! I have been working on my doortags and little things for my bulletin board all week since I am bored at home. I will also be the President of NRHH, the National Residence Hall Honorary! The more I think about that organization and let the ideas pop up the more enthusiastic I become. It’s getting a little ridiculous now. I’m just too excited! My classes, my hall, my activities, my friends, they are all great! This is my last blog though soooooo unfortunatley you woun’t be able to hear about how wonderful my year is going. Maybe I will force some of the future bloggers to write for me :-D . It’s been a spectacular year and I want to thank anyone who has been reading this thing, it’s been great to be able to share my life with you. I hope you future students pick New Paltz and make it as amazing as I have and I hope that the incoming students do the same. If there is one thing I have learned it’s that life really is what you make it. So if you’re going to do it, do it up!

as always.

Orientation Excitement!!!

So I guess I should explain my plans for the summer. Yes, I am still in New Paltz, I figure I should get the most out of my time before starting Med school that I can, and I wasn’t quite ready to leave all of this behind me right after graduation. I work in the Center for Student Development, helping organize and run orientation for First-Year and Transfer Students. I’m one of the people answering the phones and helping sort out problems, so if you’ve talked to us about your orientation date, you might have talked to me! I can’t believe how fast this summer is going by… I’d put up pictures, but in the mess of moving into my summer apartment and having most of my stuff scattered everywhere in boxes, I can’t seem to find the cable that hooks up my camera to the computer.. ugh! It’s OK though, I’m moving into my new apartment and starting to unpack things in August, so my final post may just be filled with pictures.

I’m having mixed feelings about moving on with my life. My four years in New Paltz have been so enjoyable and rewarding and I’m sad to see the end coming so soon. I’ve met so many people here, and had so much fun, I’m not sure if I’m quite ready to leave it all behind.

In any case, the point of this blog was Orientation, and if I can figure out how to make it work, there may just be some video lip sync clips up here at some point, once I get them off of my video camera. I’ve been having so much fun this summer with the incoming students, and although they make me feel very old, since I’m graduating as they are coming in, It’s kind of a nice end to my stretch of time here. I like the irony of bringing in the next round of students before I leave.

If you’ve been here for orientation already, or if you’re coming soon, leave me a comment… how did you like it in New Paltz?

It’s been a long time!!!

Hello readers…

“Life is full of beauty. Notice it. Notice the bumble bee, the small child, and the smiling faces. Smell the rain, and feel the wind. Live your life to the fullest potential, and fight for your dreams.”

First of all, I sincerely apologize for the lack of posts. This summer is just flying by.

Orientation is going great- Third Session just ended today! I cannot believe that we only have TWO left!!!! I’m having a blast working with all the new students-New Paltz is going to be absolutely filled with good peoples in the Fall. It’s sort of crazy, but I as busy as I am I’m enjoying every single minute of my summer here in New Paltz. Also, I’m working with the greatest Orientation Staff!! I mean, just look at us!!
Da GRoup!

The weekends have been filled with lots of fun. A few weekends ago, We went jetskiing! and out to dinner for OL Tony’s Birthday!
After this picture was taken, as Meg and I attempted to get off the jetski- we fell into the Hudson River!! GROSS!!!!!!!
Jet ski - pre-hudson river dunk!
Orientation Leaders REALLY like watermelon!
mmmm!

And of course!! Orientation Session One and Two!
Group Four!!! Session One!!! **The Dream Team**It’s hot, It’s hot, It’s hot in here, It must be Group Four in the atmosphere!!!**
Session one! Group Four!!!
Group Eight!!! Session Two!!! Crazy Eights!!!
Here’s our cheer! (sing to the rhythm of the Rollin’ Dirty song)
Uh oh, it’s group eight, y’all hatin’, patrollin’, sippin’ on some hateration…
Who you tryin’ be? (Group 8) * Repeat Three times
We roll with Audra, our OL, it’s so exclusive, there can be no duplication!!!
Who you tryin’ be? (Group 8) *
Yeahh! Group 8!!!

Session Three just ended- We were Group 12, ‘the Baker’s Dozen’ – because there were 13 students!!! I’ll put pictures up once I get them.

Orientation is going really great, it’s a crazy busy three days, but it’s great that all the first-year students come here and get their schedules, room assignments, ID Cards, perform the Lip Sync, see a comedian, and get more acquainted with the campus. When I think about it, we pack so much into three days- but I hope that students are feeling prepared for the Fall!!

Going into my senior year, I think back to my Orientation and how much fun that was and how it really shaped my first experiences here at New Paltz. How did I get here? Senior Orientation Leader and I’m lovin’ it. There’s nothing like being surround by hard-working, dedicated student leaders!!

In other news, next Saturday I’ll be taking my first of three state exams to gain my Provisional Teaching Certificate for my anticipated May 2007 graduation. It’s the Liberal Arts and Sciences Test, and I’m completely anxious about all these exams. Not only am I taking this test in the summer, but I had to pay $88. And that’s just only the beginning. I guess its just signaling my inevitable graduation from college!!

I’m so excited for this weekend, because all of my good friends and I will be spending some quality time together. I love it!

Thanks for reading! I vow to post more often in the future, but the summer is just flying by!

Till next time-

Or any kindness that I can show to my fellow creature,

I am truly blessed. :)

Hey All!

So it’s been a while but I do have a valid excuse!! We have been getting ready for Student Orientation and Registration for the past month and this past week was our first session of students. Orientation is amazing and it is such a great way to be able to meet students before you come here in the fall. There is a lot of business to take care of and people to listen to but there is fun stuff too. You have the chance to meet so many people and do some fun stuff too. There is a comedian one night and all the groups do a lip sync. It’s kind of scary and nerve racking at first but everybody seems to have fun in the end. My group this past week, The Channel Five News Team, was so much fun. They had a good time and I had a lot of fun with them. They won the lip sync too!! So nowww that means that we are off to the lip sync finals in August :D My friend Nellie came up to judge the lip sync this past week. It was so wonderful to see her. She was an OL last year and a truly amazing friend who I miss lots and lots! Unfortunately there was only one of my students who is going to be in FYI- the first-year initiative. It’s fun to see all the many students who will be filling up the hallways of Esopus next year. I am so excited to be a Resident Assistant in that building. It should be a great year. This weekend we are all relaxing and enjoying our time off. And then Wednesday starts another exciting week of orientation! I can’t wait to see who is coming and what the future New Paltz is going to be like. I think it looks promising! Here are some pictures of my students this past week and some of the Orientation Leaders and a special guest judge. Is anyone headed here soon? Let me know so I can look out for you during orientation. If you have any questions I’ll try and answer those too. See you all soon!!

Hey Hey Hey!
Missed me? Well, I’m still here! I mean, I am not a student at New Paltz anymore, but I still have a blue and orange heart. So much has happened since my last blog. I do not even know where to start. Well, May was a parade of award ceremonies and closing banquets. There was a Presidential Reception for Outstanding Graduates. I was invited, so I guess I was an outstanding graduates. I received an award for each of the following: Valedictorian, Honors Program, and Chancellor’s Award. Cool, huh?

Other events that happened during that month included the last RHSA events for the year. I think they went really well. We had a barbecue with Hasbrouck Dining Hall and some of the Hall Governments; we had the last Buzz Karaoke; and we had our year end ceremony. Then came the worst time of the semester: FINALS!!! Oh man! I could have done without that. I went through so many cans of Sobe No Fear, I think I have had my fill for life. I am so happy to be done with those things!

Anyway, they were soon over and I had two more things to do: Present my Honors Thesis and GRADUATE! Saturday, May 20, I presented my Honors Thesis and the potential benefits of Management Theories on Student Leadership. It was good, but no one knew how sleep deprived I was throughout that whole week. The following day was going to be Commencement and my three minutes of glory. Oh, I forgot, packing was another drag! I just shoved everything somewhere and sent them home. Unpacking hence became a mess.

Graduation Day finally came, and what a day it was. I had been watching the weather forecast all week because there was a chance that it might rain. When I was ready to leave my room, I looked into the mirror and thought, “I look ridiculous!” I was wearing a green and gold Sigma Beta Delta (School of Business) Honors Society cord, a white and gold SUNY New Paltz honor cord, a blue and gold National Residence Hall Honorary cord, and a Honors Program sash. I stepped out for my big day. The weather was b-e-a-utiful. Before graduation, Pastor Paul from the Student Christian Center had a worship service. It was a good start to my day. Pastor Paul is a great person and it was a pleasure knowing him these four years. One of the first things I did at New Paltz was attend a boat trip at West Point with the SCC and some cadets. Anyway, after the service, I went over to Old Main. I got to line up with the platform party in the Old Main. I met the guest speaker, Arthur Sulzberger, Publisher of the New York Times. I also met Congressman Maurice Hinchey, and some other important people. I felt so privileged to be in their presence. While we were walking in, I got so many handshakes, hugs and call of congratulations. I was loving it! On stage, I sat between President Poskanzer and Mr. Sulzberger. He is a funny guy. We had a few laughs up there. He delivered a really great speech. After him, it was my turn. Earlier, the President had said told me that when I got up there, I should take a moment to soak it all in. And I did. I stepped to the podium, took my hat off (that tassel was annoying and kept getting in my eyes and mouth, so I removed it), took a sip of water, and looked at the crowd. This was the moment that I had worked for. With that, I commenced the May 2006 Valedictory. I made my classmates laugh, and that was all I wanted. When it was done, I returned to my seat amid applause from the entire Old Main Quad. I turned, looked out at the crowd, and the entire Class of 2006 was one their feet in a standing ovation to me, Fitz. The President leaned over and said, “That is all for you. Relish it.” And I did. You know what, the rain did not come until the ceremony was done.

After the big day, I had to turn my attention to getting ready for work. A real job, a grown up lifestyle. Cool. On June 12, I started my job at Mediacom Communications Corporation in Middletown, NY. It is going great so far. I am working with the CFO and VP of Finance and the people there are amazing! Oh, I almost forgot, I got a new car! There is no way a ‘94 Ford Taurus was going to get me where I want to go for much longer, so I went in search of a economical car. First, I thought about getting a Scion xA, and started searching for one. After not being able to find one with the features I wanted and in the color I wanted, I started thinking about the Toyota Yaris. I did not like the package and so I turned my attention to the legendary Corolla. In the end, I got a 2006 Indigo Ink (blue) Toyota Corolla. It has all the cool features I want: ABS, curtain airbags, cruise control, daytime running lights, and of course, an in-dash six-CD changer. It has been a lot of fun driving it so far. I love this car!

Anyway, work is going great, and I am adjusting to this new life. I cannot wait for school to reopen so I can go back to visit in New Paltz. It has been a great four years and it would take ma a few books to tell you about all the memories. I will try to revisit a few of them in the next few weeks. I know I am only supposed to write a good-bye blog, but, with Rachel’s permission, I will write a few more. In the meantime, check out my speech by Clicking Here.

Hello!

Well, I’m back!! Summer Edition of my blog. :)

Things around my way have been very busy lately. I’m a Senior Orientation Leader this summer, and for the past several weeks I’ve been in training! It’s been a crazy time, but I’ll have to admit I’m having a blast.

For those new SUNY New Paltz students, I’ll see you at Orientation!!!!

it’s a very exciting time, because in approximately a week our first session of First-Year student orientation will begin! I’m absolutely thrilled for a new crew of students to arrive at New Paltz, and it’ll be my last year here, so I’m even more excited to see the future leaders at New Paltz.

I’ve been working on bulletin boards all night, so forgive me if I seem loopy. There’s a lot that goes into preparing for the arrival of the new students, but its totally worth it once they arrive.

I’ll be blogging all summer, so keep reading! I’ll post soon with some pictures of the Orientation Leaders and sharing my (last) summer in New Paltz.

Check us out.

Take care!!

Till next time-

So to catch up with things… although I have graduated from New Paltz… I’m not gone yet!!!

I’m working this summer in the orientation office, keeping super busy, of course. I really love this job, as busy as we are… I do all sorts of things… answer the phones and register people for orientation, among other things. I’ll post more soon, I’ve got pictures from graduation to put up and more, but I have to get my computer working in my summer apartment first… ugh!

You can’t take the NP out of Nicole Potestivo

WOW!! That’s all I seem to have right now…not too sure how I want to start and finish this final blog. Well I suppose first things first–> Wahhh last blog…no I don’t want to do it, but I’ve put it off long enough!

These past four years have truly been the best of my life, which only excites me for what is to come :) I did a lot while at New Paltz. Our school offers so many opportunities, how could I pass them up?!?! I played a collegiate sport, studied abroad, joined clubs, danced in many-a-lip syncs :) , student taught, Orientation Leader, Resident Assistant, Student Activities Manager, laughed till I cried with many great people, and never got bored with it. I mean, I got to do it all because I wanted to do it all! That’s all it takes…the want, the desire, the motivation to take it all on and make the absolute most of your experience!

Student teaching came to a wonderful end, and all I want to do is get out there and teach!! I’ve passed all the tests and graduated a certified NY state teacher. No, I don’t have a teaching job yet, but just knowing that I am legally qualified to teach feels A-Mazing! The Senior Send-Off events went smoothly and our Senior T-shirts rocked! I hope that’s an event someone will continue and build upon.

Our Graduation ceremony was perfect…absolutey perfect! (ugh I can’t believe that I can’t show you any pictures because my computer at home is not so good with that stuff :( ) My fancy friend Cara took initiative and managed to get us to the front of the line during graduation so that we were the first to walk in the ceremony! I had a huge smile on my face the entire day…especially seeing my entire family in the sea of people: 4 of 5 brothers were there, mom, dad, and even my grandpa from Kansas :) It was just a wonderful day! A lot of love and support from many people got me through my four years…it was so nice to see all those people that day!

Now I’m headed to California in just 3 days…YAY!!!! I can’t believe it’s here already. I’ve been in school for so long dreaming about my future…and now I make it all come true! My dreams are soon to be my reality, and I cannot wait! I know I will miss New Paltz, the people, the town, and yes even the food! It’s hard imaging not returning there next semester, and it still doesn’t seem real. I love New Paltz, maybe because I have the same initials (NP) and I’m just that shallow, but this school has been so good to me (tear). Blue and Orange pumps through these veins! Thank you to everyone who ever supported me, opened new doors, and made me smile :)

Okay, Okay, now deep breath in, exhale, and here I go…

More coming soon!!

Hello everyone,

Just wanted to give you an update on our npbloggers. Jen, Audra, Jess and Jumpei will continue to blog throughout this summer. Jen, Audra and Jess are all involved in the orientation program for first year students, and Jumpei is off to an exciting summer internship. Fitz and Nicole have both been quite busy since graduating last weekend, but will be blogging one last time in the coming weeks.

We have nine new npbloggers that will start in late August. We have another great group of students that I’m very excited for you all to meet and get to know. In the meantime, I’d love to hear your feedback. Are you a prospective student, incoming first-year student, parent or current student? Have you read the blogs for a while? Did they help give you an inside look into life as a college student at SUNY New Paltz? How often do you come back to the site to see if there are updates?

Thanks for reading, and be sure to visit throughout the summer and fall!

Sincerely,

Rachel Reuben
