Die Vampire, Die!

Saturday oh Saturday, how nutty you were (in a good way!) This was October fourth, by the way. Sorry to back track, ya’ll. I’m gonna be doing that A LOT (back tracking) because I have these videos that I want to put up from last weekend, but they aren’t finished being edited, so as soon as they’re edited I’ll slab em right up there on this here blog. So, Saturday I woke up a little later than I wanted…boo…but once I got up, I hit the gym, showered, ate somethin’ yummy and then met up with my friend Marni to study for our Western Drama 1 Midterm, which was Monday morn. Instead of studying cooped up in the library, we decided to study outside while Rock the Vote was taking place in Old Main Quad. Ah, embracing the autumn weather! We found a picnic table and began writing index cards, while listening to bands playing in the background. It was productive and refreshing! Marni even registered to vote after we finished studying! Well we had to stop at 4pm because we were all planning to go into the city for the evening! A bunch of us were going to take the bus in town, which is called Adirondacks Trailways, and see a Broadway show called Title of Show. It’s actually closing TODAY, sadly enough. I would have advised everyone to go see it, but I’m afraid now is a little late, huh? Well, at least I can tell you about it!

So a bunch of us bought our tickets online for the cheapest they had, and met up at the bus station at 4:30 for the 4:45 bus. For those who don’t go to SUNY New Paltz, let me reassure you that the bus station is SO CLOSE! From Old Main Quad, where we were studying, it’s literally a five minute walk. You just have to go down South Oakwood and then make a left on Main Street and HELLO BUS STATION. So no worries there if you want to hit up the city life or go home.

Anyway, about eight? of us are waiting on the benches at the bus stop. To pass the time, we went into the café and bought some seasonal bread that are made fresh locally. I bought the PUMPKIN BREAD (haha NP Blogger Jessie I’m such a fan of pumpkin too, it’s crazy) while some others bought the Banana Bread and so we swapped breads and munched away.

The exchanging of the breads.

This is our bus stop here in New Paltz. I guess that's pretty self explanatory though..

All a' us lookin' all cool waiting for the bus.

The clock read 5PM so I asked the ticket booth if there was a delay. She gave me a look like, “Sorry kiddo,” and told me the bus doesn’t come at 4:45 on Saturdays. It will be here at 5:45. DILEMMA. The curtain was rising at 8pm on the dot and we still had to pick up our tickets at the theatre’s box office. So when I broke the news to the group we all sat and brain stormed if we should drive to the city, get the train in Poughkeepsie, or just wait for the bus. The best route for the lot of us, we decided, was the bus station, so we bought more food for the ride and chatted away about this show. We were all a little worried that we wouldn’t make it on time, so we called the ticket booth for Title of Show and they were really nice! They said they’d hold our ticket for us even if we arrived at 8pm. So, as soon as the bus pulled up to Port Authority we BOOKED it out of that bus! We seriously ran all the way to the Lyceum Theatre! We were red in the face and sweaty by the time we arrived, but hey, we made it BEFORE the curtain went up.

This is the actual cover of the Playbill given out at the show, and coincidentally enough, this is what we all looked like running through the streets of New York City.

So the show was spectacular and sent a wonderful message trying to be original without being a sell out and still having fun! Last year Lauren Kennedy, Paul Rigano, Nick Melillo and I all did a scene from Title of Show before it was on Broadway during Fresh Act, an event the student body made up for all students to perform different art forms for all who wanted to get involved. Anyway, it was a huge success and a lotta fun. So ever since then, I’ve been dying to see this show on Broadway. My favorite song from the show is probably “Die Vampire, Die!” It’s oh so hilarious because it’s true! I’m sure EVERYONE can relate to it in one form or another. Here’s some of the lyrics that I like about this song…

Susan:

“Listen closely,
a vampire is any person or thought or feeling
that stands between you and your creative self expression,
but they can assume many seductive forms.
Here’s a few of them!
Backup:
Tell us Susan!
Susan:
First up are you pigmy vampires.
They’ll swarm around you head like gnats and say things like:
Male Backup:
Your teeth need whitening
Female Backup:
You went to state school?
Male Backup:
You sound weird
All:
Shakespeare, Sondheim, Sedaris
Susan:
Did it before you and better than you, or they might say that you cannot
sing good enough to be in a musical, or they might say:
Backup:
Ooh, your song’s derivative,
Ooh, your song’s derivative,
Ooh, your song’s derivative,

Susan:
To keep that song from you! Just tell them:
Backup:
Die vampire, die!”

Here’s a video of the cast recording themselves singing this song on YouTube. Woot Woot!

Another one of my FAVS is Nine People’s Favorite Thing. It has a beautiful concept. I copied some of the lyrics from that song as well, for your leisure. ;-)

Jeff:

“We can either follow our instinct

Or take advice from every joker
We can either be distinct
Or wind up merely mediocre
But not me
Not me

When we set out to write this musical
We said we’d write a show that we wanna see
We knew we’d never please everyone
Remember that day at Cristiti’s(?)
You said to me
You said to me

I’d rather be nine people’s favorite thing
Than a hundred people’s ninth favorite thing
Nine peoples favorite thing
Than a hundred people’s ninth favorite thing.”

After the show we raced to the stage door where we met the actors! I’ll put up some of those pics now! Take a gander!

They were all so charming and kind. Hunter said he knew of New Paltz and has stayed there a couple of times. So apparently I said something like, “Well, you should come and visit. We’ll shack you up.” Yeah, my friends still make fun of me for that one. It was a spur of the moment, hey-I’m-speaking-casually-with-a-Broadway-star comment…and that’s what came out of my mouth. Anyway, he laughed, I laughed, we all laughed. It was a night full of laughter, running and public transportation. Word.

Night ya’ll. Once I get those videos up n’ running I’ll put ya up to speed. Girl Scout’s Honor.

P.S. Company the musical (here on campus) is AROUND THE BEND! It’s stressful now, but that’s only because we’re down to the wire. We open Thursday! Cri-madey! Break legs all, with rehearsals, shows AND Midterms!
