Dave Barry & Sunday…!

Thursday, November 13th, 2008

Greetings!!

Last night was “An Evening with Dave Barry,” and the entire experience, from ushering to watching the show, was incredible! It all started when I arrived at the Athletic and Wellness Center at 6:00pm, and received a fantastic Welcome Center vest! Then, after an hour of usher training, the guests began to arrive. Now, let me tell you, everything was so much fun! I never really “ushered” any guests to their seats before, and truly, it was awesome! I felt ever so important with my name tag and flashlight! After their tickets were ripped at the door, I helped escort the guests to their seats. We spoke about Dave Barry and about New Paltz and it was just lovely! It was just such a wonderful opportunity to see students, faculty (including some of my past professors), community members, and Dave Barry fans all come together. I spoke to one couple who had never been to New Paltz before. I spoke to a man who graduated from New Paltz in 1974 who was meeting up with several of his college friends to see the show! Pretty neat! At approximately 8:00 the magnificent President Poskanzer welcomed Dave to the stage, and the show began. The show itself was so funny! It was full of bright intellectual comedy! It was delightful to listen to! The evening ended with a question and answer session. AWESOME JOB Rachel, Tara, and Russ..everything was perfect!

Ushers!

Dave Barry reppin a New Paltz hoodie!

Okay, so now to backtrack a litttttle bit, to tell you about Sunday evening. On Sunday night, NRHH held “Wings for Charity.” Pretty much, each NRHH member was asked to get sponsors for each wing that she/he ate and all of the proceeds would go to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. It was really nice to hang out with NRHH members in such an informal setting and to be able to make a difference in the lives of sick children as well.

After I was practically full, I met the Deyo RA’s, Hall Government, and Night Hosts to go to Red Robin in Poughkeepsie! It was fun hang out with everyone!

After our delicious meal, I came back to Deyo and was super productive and got so much done! It was a start to a great week!

Hope all is well! Enjoy! -Jessie

wallyWHAT?!?!

Thursday, November 13th, 2008

Hello everyone, hopefully everything is going well with your semester! It’s almost over. To those non-college students, I hope everything is going smoothly with your application process, I know that gets rough sometimes, believe me I remember!

I just wanted to do a quick update about a game that I played last night called WALLYBALL! That’s right, wallyball. It’s basically the same thing as volleyball, except you play it inside a racquetball court, AND you’re allowed to play off the walls, hence the name WALLyball.

Mabel, one of my fellow RA’s in Scudder, put on this program along with Tony Bonilla, the director of EOP. All residents were invited to play. Only a few showed up but I think that was just because people didn’t really know what wallyball was. Hopefully, after seeing this post they come because I definitely want to do it again in the future.

This was actually my second time playing wallyball. I played it once before on my senior trip during high school, but I had no idea that it was actually a known game/sport.

It was so much fun, I was really bad at first because it takes some getting used to playing inside such a small, confined space but after a while I think I got the hang of it. I really can’t wait to play again. I kind of want to start a wallyball club on campus, but I don’t know if I have the time. Maybe someone else can start it and I can just join it or something. I don’t know?

I took a few pictures of us playing. I wanted to take more but it was kind of hard because it’s such a fast paced sport I was afraid my camera was going to get attacked. Here are a few shots I took during practice!

Also, here is a video I found on youtube of wallyball. It’s not us playing, it’s not even from New Paltz. I just wanted to put a video up so you can actually get glimpse of the game. It’s really short, but I figured that’d be better!

Hope you understand the game a little bit more now, GOTTA GO because work is calling my NAME!

Measure for Measure

Thursday, November 13th, 2008

Measure for Measure by William Shakespeare opens tonight, November 13th @ 8pm and runs until the 23rd of November. The play is performed in Parker Theatre. I saw it tonight at the Gala performance and it was a wonderful performance! And the upstairs of Parker Theatre looks fabulous! They gutted it out to make a food service in the lobby, so they completely remodeled it! WHOA!

Here’s the information:

Tickets are $16. To get tickets call 845-257-3880 or go the McKenna Box Office from 11:30-4:30 (I believe those times are pretty accurate. If you’re unsure, you can just call them up.)

I know the price seems a little steep, but listen up students: tickets are $8 ON THURSDAYS! And $14 bucks any other day if you let em know you’re a student! So take advantage of that I say. You have 2 Thursday’s to see it for cheap! (General admission is $16).

Break a leg for ALL INVOLVED!

Alright, talk to ya later gator. :-)
