When is break coming?

Hey Everyone,

I hope registration is going well for everyone. I know that this week is hectic for everyone, trying to get in the classes you need and then you realize that there are no more seats in the class. Or if all the classes you need conflict with each other. That’s what’s happening in my case. I have 4 classes left to graduate. Just 4 more and of course all the classes I need conflict of course, its the way the world works.  So we’ll see how this works out  in the next few days.

I can’t wait until Thanksgiving break. In college it becomes one of the greatest vacations in my opinion. Its timing couldn’t be any better. At this point of the year everyone starts to go a little crazy. Teachers like to pile on the work right before Thanksgiving because when we get back most start to prepare for the final in the class. I for example have 4 essays due before the break. So the timing of Thanksgiving couldn’t be better. It gives you a break from the crazy work you just had to do and it recharges you for that push you need to get to through finals. You can’t forget that you get to see your family and friends that you haven’t seen in awhile, in my case a few months. I love the feeling of waking up in your own bed, the bed that you grew up in, not your school bed. Or when you can finally shower without having to wear sandals. And who can forget the food. I never have had a problem with the food on campus but you can never compare it to home cooked meals. There’s no better meal then the one you have after being at school for awhile.

I don’t know if anyone went out to see the meteor shower the other night but I saw one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen. A group of us RA’s and residents from LeFevre went out to Hasbrouck Park around 2am to watch the meteor shower. At first we really didn’t see anything and the clouds were pretty thick. However about a half hour in we saw this huge explosion/flash in the sky and then a big blue-green streak went across the sky. The tail was so bright and long that the tail was still in the sky 5 minutes later. That was the only meteor that we saw that night but what we saw was amazing. The next day I looked up videos and pictures from around the globe and from all the pictures and videos I saw none looked like what we saw. It was truly amazing.

Has anyone else played the New Super Mario Bros. for the Wii? It is an awesome game. If you ever played the original ones for the Nintendo then you’ll love this game. It’s got the old school feel to it but looks amazing. Then there’s the multiplayer mode that makes the game really fun to play. Up to four players can play at the same time. All the players are on the screen at the same time. This of course makes things interesting when you start throwing your friends of a cliff.  If you have a Wii I strongly recommend getting this game.

Anyways I hope you all have a great Thanksgiving and I hope you all survive the craziness that is the last few weeks of a semester!

Sick

Well it finally caught up to me. Everyone around me was getting sick and I knew I’d eventually get it. I thought I was in the clear then BLAM I’m sick. I remember back in grade school and high school you wanted to have sick days. You would just sit at home on the coach and watch nicktoons all day. That was the life. Now when you get sick you worry about all the work that you missed by not going to class. So I’ve pretty much been in my room watching bad TV all day.

However the Yankees are on right now and are currently winning so that’s making me feel a little bit better. Let’s talk about how the Yankees are pretty much dominating the playoffs. So far they haven’t lost a single game. (I know by saying that they’ll probably lose this game.) I hope everyone saw the game on Saturday because that was an epic game. It’s because of games like that that make October baseball so great. If the Yankees keep playing like this they’ll be tough to beat.

Speaking of other sports news I’m going to brag a little bit. The Buffalo Bills beat the mighty New York Jets. I get so much grief all the time for being a Bills fan here. Everyone here either likes the Jets or the Giants. That doesn’t leave much room for us Bills fans. Which always confuses me because the true New York team is Buffalo. The Giants and Jets play in New Jersey. So technically the Bills are the only team that actually plays in New York.  Anyways leading up to the game all I heard was that the Jets are going to dominate the Bills. The thing is they should have. The Bills are an awful team this year. Yet somehow yesterday the Bills pulled out a win in overtime. It was glorious. So to all the Jets fans out there I hope you soak in what happened yesterday.

Anyways that’s about it for now. I’ll be keeping you updated.

Maine

Hey Everyone!

I know it’s been a little while but I’ve been crazy busy with classes lately. With test and papers I feel like I haven’t had a lot of time to do a whole lot of other things. A few things have happened since the last time I posted.  September 26th was my birthday and I turned 23. I honestly can’t believe that I’m that old already. It’s pretty scary to think that in seven years I’ll be 30! Anyway I had a fantastic birthday. I want to thank all my family and friends for everything. They are the greatest group of people ever and I wouldn’t be anywhere without them. One of the gifts that I got was from my girlfriend and she got me a camera. I’ve never really owned a camera so I’m really excited to start taking pictures and share them on the blog.

This past weekend was amazing. I went up to Acadia National Park in Maine. It was the most beautiful place I’ve ever been. We went up there for my Structural Geology class. We were there from Thursday to Sunday. It was a long drive but it was totally worth it.  We saw a lot of different cool geological structures and I really learned a lot. However I still can’t express to how beautiful Maine really is with words. So with my new camera I took a lot of pictures and I’m going to share a few of them with you.Acadia National ParkAcadiaAcadia Light House Acadia Top of Cadillac MountainTop of Cadillac MountainAcadiaOutside of a CaveInside a CaveSand Beach from the top of the BeehiveThe Bee HiveSand BeachAn ErraticA boat in Bar HarborAcadiaStarfishMoose

I apologize if the moose picture offends anyone. We tried to find a living moose the whole time we were there but we couldn’t find one. We were driving  and we saw this truck with a moose in it. So naturally we had to stop and a take a look. When we got to the truck we found out that a 12 year old kid was the one to shoot the moose. This moose was only 800 pounds which is relatively small. This moose was almost the size of the whole pick up truck. I hope the pictures give you a sense of what the park was like. Like I said it was absolutely amazing and I recommend you all going there once in your life.

Again I apologize for not posting in awhile but I now that life has slowed down a bit I will be posting a lot more. I hope you all have a great week!

Zoo Pictures!

Hey Everyone!

So the past week was a crazy week. With class and work it seemed like I had no time to breathe. This weekend was good though, one of my friends from home came up and we went and saw the Yankees play. It was my first time being at the new stadium so I was really excited to go. The game itself wasn’t too good. The Yankees ended up losing 7-3 to the Orioles. The night before the game we were watching the Yankees and Jeter was going for the franchise record for most hits and we were hoping that he wouldn’t’ get the hit that broke the record on Friday and hoping he would get it on Saturday when we were at the game. Unfortunately that didn’t happen because he broke the record on Friday. Other then that the stadium was beautiful and I can’t wait to see another game there.

Last weekend I went to the Bronx zoo with my girlfriend and her friend. She had to do a project for a class so I figured I would follow her there and see some cool animals. So as promised I decided I would share some pictures with you all.

244th Day of the Year

Hey Everyone,

The first week of class is done and if that’s any indication of how this semester is going to go it’s going to be a very busy year. I’m taking 20 credits; I’m a CDA in LeFevre and have two jobs. This weekend I pretty much passed out and slept as much as I could.

I’m taking a lot of Geology classes this semester and with Geology classes that means a lot of fieldwork. I’m excited about that because I basically get to have class outside a lot while other people are in a classroom. It’s a great time and I’m sure I’ll have a lot of pictures of that.

In other news, I’m obsessed with the West Wing now. Over the summer I was working and one of my fellow co-workers was talking about the show.  I kind of gave him a hard time about it saying that no one our age watches it and it can’t be that exciting being that it’s about the White House staff. However he invoked the whole you can’t mock it till you watch it rule. So I decided I would give it a try. I watched the first episode and I was hooked. The show is brilliantly written and entertaining. Who knew a show about politics could be so good.

I’ll stay on this little TV rant that I’m going on and talk about my favorite show of all-time. Smallville, I know most of you are jumping to conculsions already but it really is a great show. They took the character of Superman (Greatest Superhero in my opinion) and gave us a whole new look on the character. You get to see the more “human” side of Kal-El and watch as he is developing his powers. I just recently bought the 8th season and watching it to prep myself for season 9. For all the haters of Smallville out there its going into 9th season and they are signed for a 10th, so for a show that no one likes it’s doing pretty well.

I’ll jump to movies now. Next week the movie 9 opens and who would have guessed the release date is 9/9/09.  The movie is about robots taking over the human race and our society. This scientist in the last hours of the human race gave life to these 9 rag dolls and it’s their job to save the world.

Tim Burton directed it and it has a lot of big names in it. Check it out.

I have a few entertaining weekends ahead of me. This weekend I’m going to the Bronx Zoo and then next weekend one of my best friends from home is coming up and we’re going down to watch the Yankees play in their new stadium. I’m hoping that I get some good pictures and I can share them with you all in my next couple blogs.  As for now that’s it for this blog!

MLB Standings

Principal: Mr. Madison, what you’ve just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
Billy Madison: Okay, a simple “wrong” would’ve done just fine.

First Blog!

Hey Everyone!

So welcome to my blog for the year. This is my first time blogging so this is a new experience for me and we’ll see how it goes. I guess I should start by telling you a bit about who I am and what I do.

My name is Jimmy Ireland. This is currently my fifth year here at New Paltz and I’m majoring in Geology. My ultimate goal is to go to grad school for my Masters in Education and become a high school Earth Science teacher. I’m from Bergen, NY which is out in Western New York. It’s smack dab in the middle of Rochester and Buffalo. According to some people I know they think that I live up in a tree house and hunt Woolly Mammoth. I’m just going to set the record straight. I live in house and it’s not always snowing. It’s actually 72 degrees there as I’m writing this.

One thing you’re going to find out about me quickly is that I love sports. I pretty much will watch every sport. I have actually been caught watching curling passionately during the last Olympics. I’m a hardcore follower of three sports though. Baseball, football, and hockey. I love the Yankees, the Buffalo Bills, and the Buffalo Sabres, three of the greatest teams ever.

As for playing sports I’ve pretty much played everything on some sort of competitive team. Once I got to high school I joined the cross-country team, the swim team, and the track team. I also continued to swim here at New Paltz and was actually on the New Paltz swim team. Another fun fact about me is that my friends from home and I are huge wiffleball players. We have teams and uniforms and we even built a stadium. It has a scoreboard, a fence, foul poles, a mound, and I was just informed by my friend he found a way to mount his flood lights so we now can have night games.

I’m also a CDA over in Lefevre Hall. I have been an RA/CDA in Lefevre for 6 semesters now and I love it. I love the staff that we have this year and I can’t wait for the year because we’re going to be doing a lot of amazing things. I also work on campus as a lifeguard and greeter at the Welcome Center. So if you are ever in the pool or in the Haggerty Administration Building say hello.

Like I said I’m really looking forward to blogging this year. I’ll try to keep you all entertained and give you some fun stuff to read. So that’s it for now but keeping checking back I’ll be posting again very soon!
