Unfortunate Events

As you can see from my title I am a bit bummed this week (we’ll more than a bit, but I’m doing what I can).

Monday night I sprained the front part of my foot near my big toe; I was dancing in glee and came down too hard from a stunt I do in one of our numbers. Tuesday I went to a doctor at FirstCare Walk-in Medical Center in Highland, which is just outside of New Paltz. Thankfully I was told my foot was not fractured, but was a sprain. The staff there was really nice and they have a great waiting room that is all water/ocean themed- the children’s play room has a ton of fake fish ornaments dangling from the ceiling!! I did not have to wait long to see the doctor. So if you are in the area I would recommend their walk-in center :D

I was given crutches and I have been on them since Tuesday; I am hoping to be off them completely after this weekend. I was supposed to dance in our annual dance show, “Dance Underground” this weekend, but I will not be performing unless I feel better by the last show or so. “Dance Underground” premiered last night (Thursday) and I was front and center to see it- it was AMAZING!! We truly do have awesome dancers in New Paltz, and there was even a guest performance by Energy Dance Company, a youth dance group based out of Kingston. Those kids can dance better than most people I have seen. I am attending the show again tonight and can’t wait to see it all again! The last two performances are Saturday and Sunday at 12pm.

Other than my foot fiasco nothing to exciting. The weather has been all over the place recently considering it was relatively hot yesterday and today it snowed and rained all day. But classes are going well so I am happy for that.

Now I am going to get ready for the show, fingers crossed I can be back on my feet and dancing soon!!

I’m coming homee!

Hello everybody!

I hope all is well with everybody. This week, I went to RHSA’s Winter Formal, which I will definitely have pictures of next week because right now I’m home and I don’t have my camera. That’s right. Me. Ashley Finger. Home for a weekend. I am so exited because this is a rarity for me… but I am sure I’ll have a good time. I am getting my nails done and I am also seeing the tickets to my Foster the People concert! WOOT. :)

Anyway, back on topic to the formal. There was food, drinks (non-alcoholic, of couse!), raffles, a photo booth, a DJ, and so much more! It reminded me of a high school dance, only so much better. Some people were even wearing PROM DRESSES. Like GOWNS. Not cocktail dresses! Unfortuately, I was not able to make it to formal last year so this was the first one I went to and it was truly shocking! Also, the Residence Hall Student Association is a pretty tightknit group of people, so being there with close friends makes it even more fun. Here is a picture of me and my friends Helaina and Ki Soo. :) (Taken from facebook.)

So that was last night. The weekend before, we had a really nice “dinner party” at my friend Helaina’s apartment! Here, we cooked dinner, did makeup and made virgin drinks! … Which we realized after the fact that it’s just normal drinks i.e. Arnold Palmers. 1/2 and 1/2 mmm :) Here’s some pictures from that:

Look! RAW CHICKEN! I was rolling it in Adobo. Here is the finished product:

It was a Mexican Chicken Casserole type of thing. If anyone wants the recipe, it is here: http://www.jamhands.net/2008/12/mexican-chicken-casserole.html

Other than that, I have nothing major going on right now but midterms are gonna come around the corner pretty soon! About to get my study on, if you know what I mean :0 well, surely the library will know what I mean because it’s gonna see me there all the time.

Enjoy the weekend, everybody! Talk to you soon.

I wish I could sing!!

Hey everyone,

Now here at New Paltz there are a lot of talented people; whether it is in music, the arts, dance, or anything else.  This past weekend, Saturday  February 18th, I went to the third annual Absolut A Cappella Spring Invitational.  At the Invitational, our three A cappella groups performed: Male Call (an all male group), The Sexy Pitches (an all female group), and Absolut A Cappella (a co-ed group).  Other school are also invited to perform at the Invitational each year; this year included the Minor Adjustments from SUNY Plattsburgh and The Accidentals from Vassar College.

I decided to go to the performance because I heard that our A cappella groups were really good, but I had never heard them before.  Let me tell you, I am so glad that I went; all of the groups were extremely good.  I was so surprised because I didn’t expect them to be as good as they were.  They sang a lot of modern songs that many people know and sounded really good singing them.  I actually know a few people in all of the groups and I can’t believe that I never knew how well they could all sing.

I took a few pictures at the show, take a look!!!!

(Apologies to the Sexy Pitches, I forgot to get a picture of you) :(

I will make sure  to go tomore of their performances through out the year.  What about all of you, do you like A cappella?  If you can sing and you come to New Paltz, do you think would you try out for any of these groups.

Hello readers!

We have a long weekend and I am currently home on Long Island.  This week was a little uneventful compared to last week. I am still working on three studio projects and brainstorming ideas for my London Art Seminar project. For one class I am learning a new technique called electroforming. It involves growing copper. I have a test coming up during the week that I am studying for. I am also figuring out my summer plans.

I also found a new website called Pinterest. It is pages similar to a bulletin board of all different images. You can click on the image and then it will bring you to the site where you can find the instructions to a craft or where to buy an item. I have been spending some of my free time on there. They have good jewelry and crafts.

Here are some craft pins:

Into the Storm

Hello out there!!

Hope everyone is having a super great Friday night, apologies on a late post.

Tonight I performed in “SACA Presents: Monsoon.” SACA stands for the South Asian Student Association and every year they host a dinner complete with entertainment and raffles. They are one of the many great cultural clubs on campus. I performed a fusion Bharatanatyam dance (a form of Indian dance- a mouthful I know haha) titled “Thaye Yashoda.” What’s distinct about this form of dance is the cloth fan attached to the inside of the pants, giving a very beautiful silhouette with some moves and poses. I do not have a video of my performance, but check out these classical Bharatanatyam dancers- stunning! Bharatanatyam Dance

It was a really fun night and I had a lot of great Indian food! Once April comes I will tell you all about Rainbow Month, which is when 4 of the cultural clubs on campus are each given a week to educate the campus community on their culture through fun and interactive events. But more about that later!

Next weekend I will perform “Thaye Yashoda” again in Dance Underground, the annual dance show on campus. I can’t wait to see the other awesome dances that will be performed! Our Dance Association on campus does a great job of bringing dance to the student body, with free weekly dance classes in everything from hip hop to tap. Even though we do not have a Dance major at New Paltz, there’s lots of dance teams and events to take part in!

Other than dancing I have been busy as usual with schoolwork and clubs. I’m gonna use this long weekend to recharge (we have Monday off!)- next week I’ll be back with lots of energy (hopefully haha).

Now I’ll sit back and relax, I hope you all enjoy the long weekend!

Peace :)

Words with Friends

Hey everyone,

Something has recently happened to me that I think many of you can relate to.  I’ve been hearing a lot about the “words with friends” application, so today I decided to download it on to my ipod.  Let me tell you, I kind of wish that I never downloaded it because I am addicted to it now.

If you don’t know what words with friends is, it is an application where you can play scrabble against any of your friends that also have the application.  I have had this application on my ipod for less than a day and I am already playing about seven different games with seven different people.  I don’t know why, but I get addicted to games really easily. Perfect example, I was at the library today and I was supposed to be doing homework and being productive.  For the two hours I was there, I did about an hour of work and spent the other hour playing words with friends.

The funny thing is that I have never played scrabble before in my life.  I was actually at work and I had to have one of my co-workers explain to me how the game worked.  I haven’t been winning any of the games I have been playing, but it’s really fun.

Hopefully this doesn’t become an everyday kind of thing because I need to get my work done, so I will graduate. Have any of you had this same experience with this game or with any other game for that matter?  Leave a comment below and we can talk about our unproductive addictions. :)

Hello everybody!

I made a presidential quote in honor of President’s Day coming up soon! YAY! New Paltz only gets a day off, but some friends from the island are coming up so that is gonna be really exciting and I’m gonna have a LOT of different pics to show you all from that!

So campus happenings. Absolut A Cappella is having their annual Invitational this Saturday from 6:30-9:30 PM in McKenna theatre. Now, some of you may be asking this: Invitational? What’s that? Well, basically there are a cappella groups from other SUNY schools and they all come together for one big “concert!” I myself have never been to an invitational before (it’s open to all but I have always had prior commitments.) So if anybody is going to it this year, I would love to see pictures and videos! Here is what it’s also about, taken from their Facebook invite:

It’s that time of year again! Absolut A Cappella is hosting it’s spring invitational on Saturday, February 18th in McKenna Theatre! Doors open at 6:30pm and the show begins at 7:00pm. And it’s FREE!!! Come for an awesome night of A Capella music featuring SUNY New Paltz…’s: Male Call The Sexy Pitches And our Guest Groups: MYSTERY GROUP WOOOO From SUNY Plattsburgh – Minor Adjustments ANOTHER MYSTERY GROUP WEEEEE And of course the one and only: Absolut A Cappella! Would you rather spend your weekend mourning some dead presidents or rocking our to some amazing music? I think you know the answer.

For those of you who don’t know, we have an all male a cappella group called Male Call, and the all female group is called the Sexy Pitches. The co-ed group is Absolut A Cappella. :)

So now away from campus happenings and back to my daily life! Last Saturday, me and my friends Steph and Saf got our nails done. We went to USA Nails, which is in one of the major shopping plazas in town. They sponsor a 20% off student discount, which I didn’t even know about until I got there so that’s always nice! Here is a picture of our nails.

Mine are the blue ones!

It is very hard getting used to doing daily activities with them; however, I am really growing to them and starting to like them a lot! Another thing that is going on in my life is that I want to start going to this club:

COSMIC CLUBBBBBBBBBB

So we’ll see.. that’s something I’m very interested in! :)

Let me know what’s going on with you all! Sincerely, — Asshleeyyy!! :D

Hey readers!

This week had several highlights:

  • Casting:

My first experience ever working with molten metal was thrilling yet nerve racking. On Friday my class started to cast our sample molds. I had made a simple leaf design and I was excited to see how it would turn out. There were a few steps to the process but I was working with a very hot flame. We had to hold the torch in one hand while pointing the flame at the crucible with the metal bits. When the metal became a liquid we had to quickly pour the crucible into the mold that was standing in a frying pan with pumice stones around it.  My cast was unsuccessful since I had too much metal. It ended with the metal pouring directly through my mold and not taking much form besides a giant blog attached to small part of my design. I am hoping my next mold will come out better, but I was still proud I had performed a cast.

  • Tours:

It was my second week of  being a Student Ambassador. I am starting to get a routine down for my tours as well as becoming more confident. I even went out on my first solo tour today. I had a small group of two families that were very excited to see the campus. I felt that the tour was successful and the families were also very pleased.  I am looking forward to my next tour on Wednesday.

  • Valentine’s Day Sales:

As February 14th is just around the corner the Metals’ department and Print club held their annual student work sales. The MFA and BFA students have an opportunity to make items and sell them to the New Paltz community.  The sales had a variety of work ranging from earring and, rings to cards, and scarves. I ended up making a purchase from the Print club since I try to support all of the art departments.

Happy Valentine’s Day to all!

Until Next Time!

Off to the Slopes

Hello!!

So ends another week at New Paltz, but one of the highlights happened off campus when I  took a trip to Hunter Mountain through our Outdoors Pursuits program at the Athletic and Wellness Center. $25 got me a lesson, rentals, and a lift ticket- what a steal!!

Check out some pics:

After the slopes!

Taking off the boots- what a workout!

Rocking the light blue ski pants!!

The day was a success- I only fell twice and got down the bunny slopes fine. If you haven’t gone skiing or snowboarding I encourage all of you to try it out! Two friends who came with me that had never been skiing before and they had fun- it’s never too late to try!

Well that’s all for tonight folks, Happy Friday!!

:)
