I’m Graduating.

Hi Cyberland.

I am graduating.  It’s crazy.  The beginning of the year, I honestly panicked.  New Paltz has been home for the past four years.  It feels like more including all of the summers and winter breaks I traveled back early for orientation or RA Training.

thanks google!

Thank You Google.

There comes a point in every senior’s year, where they reach the “does it really matter?” question. Commonly and fondly referred to as #senioritis.  Luckily, (I don’t know If I’d say luckily is the right word…) but I’ve had my senior thesis with the honor’s program to help me keep pushing through.  My thesis DOES matter to me.  It’s something I want to be proud of.  :)  I’ve mentioned it here and there, at quick little moments in this blog, but I decided to share more with you all. Disclaimer: I still consider it a “work in progress” I feel like this is a project I will be continuing for some time now.

What I wanted to do: Bridge my love of photography and the experiences both inside and outside of the classroom.

What I did:  I interviewed and photographed three students of different campus involvement levels at two contrasting pressure points of the semester.  Week 1 was during midterms, when stress is sky high. Week two was directly after spring break, when everyone is still calmly running around the quad barefoot.

How: I picked three girls, 1- minimally involved, 2- Actively involved, 3- Overly involved, on campus with work or extracurricular activities, and interviewed them in an environment of their choice. (Most went with their residence hall rooms)

I then asked them a series of questions about how they prioritize balance their personal, academic, self-care (mental & physical), and academic responsibilities.

I photographed all of their responses, in hopes to visually compare how their answers changed and how the stress of the semester may have physically took a tole on their bodies and their environment.

My 6 interviews acquired over 400 photos.  (WHICH WAS A LOT TO SORT THROUGH.  I was not the happiest of campers when trying to balance working on this project, along with my other classes, and role as an RA)

I am hesitant to share my research findings as concrete data, considering my sample size was only 3 students (vrs 100-200 participants) but I still think my thesis and the student’s answers are valuable :) hello areas for future research!

Here is a sneak preview: I have so many more and am working on uploading them to some sort of blog as a final product.

The Week of Good Deeds and SUNSHINE!

CYBERLAND.

I hope you have been enjoying the sunshine as much as New Paltz!

Free events galore!  We had a farmers market on Old Main Quad, free t-shirt dying with Relay for Life on Parker Quad, an Earth Day event with live music on Hasbrouck quad, and the Student Art Alliance had free button making!  These events are awesome, but can be a little dangerous if you are avoiding your work. I recommend buckling down on work in the morning or night so you can enjoy your afternoon ;)

Here's a few most of the group warming up before our show!

The Sexy Pitches held fundraiser!

Here’s a few of our girls warming up before our performance

My favorite part of the week???  My A Capella group held a benefit concert at The Green Palette in town!  The Green Palette is a really cool furniture store, it’s right next to moxie cupcake!  The store has live music shows and a lot of really unique merchandise!  Check it out :)

The Sexy Pitches  raised over 260$ for the Center for Safety and Change in Rockland County.  We asked for donations at the door and sold handmade earrings, necklaces, photos (mine! :D ), and knitted goods!  Here is the center’s website if you are interested in supporting! http://www.rocklandfamilyshelter.org

I am so proud of my group for organizing and setting up this event.  I think it’s very special that students can use their clubs to help others.  After the horrors of Boston, I felt so terrible and all I wanted to do was try to spread positive energy.  I love my school, but sometimes I don’t check the news enough to fully know what is happening in the world.  Our fundraiser could not have felt anymore appropriate and helped me reach out to my near by community.  <3

On another note: As my thesis presentation on tuesday morning gets closer and closer, I get more stressed and anxious.  I decided I needed to relax and just prepare, instead of worrying.  I went for a long run on the Rail Trial in town and instantly felt better.  I have been spending countless hours on my thesis, it was nice to take some personal time!  I am studying how student prioritize and balance their academic, social, physical, and self-care responsibilities.  It’s very interesting!  Check back next week for more info!  Here are a few photos from my run!  I found a farm, cows, and the most beautiful sunset view of the mountains! I love this place<3

You can catch it right in town :)

Just be sure you turn around when you get tired because it reaches over 10 miles :P

I hope you all have a wonderful week!

#WHENWORKTAKESOVER

Ello Cyberland!

This week had a very rough start for me.  I was sick and had two presentations, a photo critic, and work to do for my senior thesis. (I have to present it on the 30th! what? almost there!)

I think this picture accurately describes how I felt…

memes are all over facebook...

memes are all over facebook…

Sure enough, I got through it!  College can get stressful, but always remember those rough patches have an end! I went to the library to do my work, it really helped.   outsideI love the library.  Yes, I said it.  I have such a hard time focusing on my work when I am in my hall, so the library is the perfect spot for me.  It also motivates me to work faster.  As much as I love the place, I don’t want to spend my entire day there :P It’s open from 8am (earlybirds) to around 11:30pm.  If anyone is a night owl there’s a late night study room open all night!

Here are the results from my panorama Critic in my Photography class! I shared my best friends love for dance (THANKS JAZZ!!!) I had to size them pretty small to work on the webpage, so they aren’t the best quality – enjoy :P Pan1PrintreadyparkerBlog

URINETOWN

Hi Cyberland!

This week I went to a really awesome student run production of URINETOWN!

Yes.  That is what the musical is called.

The show is in Studley theater Tonight (Friday) & Saturday at 8pm.  General admission is 4$ and its only 2$ for students.  GO SEE IT.

The show definitely not your average musical and will keep you laughing! The students are incredible!  The Miami Theater Players is the club you can join if you’d like to be a part of future shows or help out in anyway!

Everything is student run – from directors to actors to set crew!  You audition, hopefully have a callback and get cast in the show.  Students then rehearse and practice before the big opening night!

Check out these awesome flyers & photos of the show by Darrian Amaker!

I loved seeing my friends on stage! It is really cool to see them work so hard on something and now get to perform for a large audience! My cousin tori is playing little sally! :) I had such a great time at the show, it was a fun way to relax after a full day of classes!  I am also excited because my family is also going to come up for the weekend to see the show!  Another feature I love about New Paltz, it’s only about 2 hours from home.  I can easily go home & or get a visit from the family!

On a side note: for anyone interested in applying to be a blogger – NOW IS YOUR CHANCE! :) apply here: http://npbloggers.newpaltz.edu https://docs.google.com/a/hawkmail.newpaltz.edu/forms/d/18-ggF4JejDhcGQ981mRMEO5bRMz3–Fg_3qQ2f6b4l4/viewform

Honored to be Recognized!

Hey Cyberland!

I was really honored this week!  I was chosen as one of the recipients of the SUNY Chancellors Award for Student Excellence!

The Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence recognizes students who integrate “academic excellence with accomplishments in the areas of leadership, athletics, community service, creative and performing arts, campus involvement, or career achievement.” That’s taken right from the website, you can read more here–> http://www.suny.edu/sunyNews/News.cfm?filname=2013-04-04-CASE-PTKrelease.htm

If you are interested in how to be nominated for the award, a faculty member or department nominates students and fills out an application.  To the best of my knowledge, the nominees are then voted on by a campus committee and then a SUNY wide committee, before being approved by the Chancellor.

My mom, little brother, and Dad joined me at the ceremony!

My mom, little brother, and Dad joined me at the ceremony!

My parents and I drove to the Empire State Convention Center in Albany for the ceremony yesterday.  I was joined by our campus President Donald Christian, four other SUNY New Paltz students, and 239 other SUNY Students.  I was so honored to be recognized among the other students, many of which have made incredible accomplishments throughout their time at college!   Here is a link to all of the recipients this year -http://www.suny.edu/Files/sunynewsFiles/Pdf/CASE-2013.pdf

Fellow SUNY New Paltz recipients include, Chelsea Stokes, Faith Hassel, Kimbery Lepore, and Destiny Saldivar.  Congrats!!!

I was so honored to meet Chancellor Nancy Zimpher and listen to her powerful speech!  We also recorded a video about why “Suny makes college worth it” which I’ll post later this week along with better quality photos ;) !

I can honestly say that after looking back, I have made the most of my four years at New Paltz.  I have really grown as a person and as a student.  I encourage you to do the same :) Join clubs, pursue your interests, and never hold yourself back. I think there is so much to learn outside of the classroom, just as there is inside.

Thanks for reading & have a great one!

>Communication and Media Week- My major department hosts a week every year of communication events.  There were lectures, games, alumni panels, speakers etc.  My professors offered extra credit for attending, I went to a trivia night!  Who would have know all that movie/musical theater loving would pay off ;) Alumni Panels are helpful, it’s so great to ask someone who was just in your shoes how they like the real world/how they got their foot in the door!

> It’s almost spring break!  I’ll be in Florida on Sunday with my best friend! I am so excited!  I can’t wait to relax on the beach! Hello sunshine :D (If you find yourself wanting to go on a spring break trip I definitely recommend planning early! Book flights in december so you can save $.

I hope everyone has a happy and safe spring break! <3

Hey NP, Can We Go Thrift Shopping?

THIS WEEK.

I went to the Bakery for breakfast before class on Wednesday.  It was delicious!  I enjoyed a wholewheat everything bagel (UGH SO GOOD) while doing my reading for class.  Check out their website if you are interested, http://www.ilovethebakery.com

On my way back to campus I received an email from my professor canceling class.  I hoped my professor would feel better, but I took advantage of my open schedule!  I spent some time doing homework and then made a quick trip to The Salvation Army in town, which students fondly refer to as “Salvo.”

If you ever want to go thrift shoping, New Paltz has got you covered!  There are a bunch of antique & thrift shops in town.  Best part –> Wednesdays are family day at Salvation Army.  This means I scored two new dresses for only two dollars each! :)

It’s pretty much a scavenger hunt in there, sometimes you have to dig through lots of racks before finding a winner.  I love thrift shopping.  I always feel like I am on some sort of a treasure hunt and revisiting other time periods.  Finding a super 80′s dress can always make me laugh!  Also, as a college student, I can’t beat finding a great shirt for only two dollars.  Budgeting isn’t always easy, but places like Salvo can help!

The rest of my week has been a combination of Sexy Pitches practice, a performance at Bliss Hall, photo homework, an RA program  - Black Light Zumba, more homework, and my thesis work.  Don’t worry, I found some free time to treat myself to a manicure ;)

I almost never have polish on my nails, but I loved these colors!

Black lights and highlighters made my Zumba program so much more fun! :)

Yes. I said Thesis, as a student in the Honor’s Program I have to do my own Senior Thesis.  I am using photography and interviews to study how students balance their responsibilities and activities.  I’ll post all about it next week! :)

Until then,

have a great week Cyberland

Not all Learning Takes Place in the Classroom.

Hi there!

Google's homepage!

Google’s homepage is celebrating International Women’s Day!

Today is International Women’s Day.

check out this website to learn more: http://www.internationalwomensday.com/default.asp

What does this mean?  All across the world, events are held to inspire women and celebrate achievements.  These events can range from political rallies to conferences, theatrical performances, etc.   It was initiated more than 100 years ago by female garment workers in the United States, as a day of solidarity for working women.

SUNY New Paltz celebrated by holding a “Rally to Defend Women’s Rights.”  I went to this program with my friend Val yesterday and I heard about it through one of my classes.

Here's a photo of the event

Here’s a photo of the event

The event was held in the Lecture center and there were a variety of speakers, poetry, and musical performances.  It was organized by a group of campus and community women.  The lecture covered a variety of movements, ranging from women’s rights, to peace, to the environment, to labor, and to student rights.

There are always a bunch of lectures and guest speakers through out the semester at New Paltz.   Wherever your passions lie, you can find an event :)   I encourage you to attend lectures like this during your time at college.

I’m not devaluing classes, but there is only so much that a textbook can teach you.  If you apply what you learn in class to your everyday life, you’ll find your mind opening much faster.

Thanks for reading!

Put Your Records On

Hiya Cyberland!!!

This week, I was swamped with homework, meetings, and programs.  Needless to say this little busybee felt a bit stressed.  Sometimes college can be stressful, BUT it’s so easy to wind down.  I can tell you that you will always get through those rough patches :)  My strategy = Always just take a break!

THE BAKERY!

My baby cupcake! YUM

My baby cupcake! YUM

This week, my friends and I went to The Bakery in town :) I have the biggest sweet tooth and am a sucker for anything frosted or decorated!  They have delicious baked goods ranging from bagels, to cookies, to cakes, to real food.  I hear their sandwiches are even better than the cookies, but I won’t know until I try one ;)  I love going to the bakery, I feel more relaxed the minute I step foot in town!

The other highlight of my week was making RECORD BOWLS with Bevier!

Our record bowls from start to finish!

Our record bowls from start to finish!

I had a PCA, Peer Career Assistant/Resident Assistant Program :) As PCA, I am the liaison for the Career Resource Center to Bevier Hall.  I help spread the word about events, review resumes, and direct residents to the CRC.  My program was a lot of fun and my residents loved it!  Check out this how to video on youtube :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hpmDCe_NIG0

Here’s a few photo’s of the process!

step 1.

step 1. Heat up the record for about 2-3 minutes

I related this to RECYCLING FOR YOUR CAREER

1. RECYCLE your experiences.  Network with past employers and coworkers.  You never know what jobs they know of or WHO they might know.

2. REUSE your experiences.  Keep track of all your extracurriculars and volunteer activities.  Have a master copy of your resume and add each experience to it.  You can then tailor your resume for your next job/internship. Be sure to stop by the CAREER RESOURCE CENTER! They can help you!

Step 2. Push the record into the bowl and change it's shape. Be Careful it's not too hot!

Step 2. Push the record into the bowl and change it’s shape. Be Careful it’s not too hot!

3.  REDUCE the use of boring or the same words on your resume! Get creative and mix it up! check out the CRC for a list of good and bad resume words :)

Step 3. Cool down and Enjoy. We melted crayons in ours for a little extra decoration.

Let me know if you try making your own :)  Have a great week! :)

Thursday Nights are Awesome :)

Hi Cyberland!

Last night was the first Residence Hall a Capella show of the Semester!   Absolute A Capella, Male Call, and the Sexy Pitches performed in Crispell Hall.

Our shows are on Thursday nights and we travel to a different hall each time :)  Representatives from each group meet up and plan out our shows for the semester. We rehearse twice a week to prepare.  Rumor has it The Sexy Pitches are working on new songs ;)  Each group sings about 4-5 songs and usually wears a themed outfit. The Sexy Pitches’ colors are Black, Red, and White (hence the photos).

Here's a few of the girls warming up!

I love getting to perform, but sometimes it’s just as fun to watch the other groups! :) Absolute A Capella sang “ThriftShop” by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis.  IT WAS AWESOME!!!

I’d say each of us have our own musical style, which makes the show fun for a variety of students!  If you are into anything ranging from jazz, to rap, to top 100′s, to oldies, we have got you covered.  Check out a few pictures.
