I’m Graduating.

Hi Cyberland.

I am graduating.  It’s crazy.  The beginning of the year, I honestly panicked.  New Paltz has been home for the past four years.  It feels like more including all of the summers and winter breaks I traveled back early for orientation or RA Training.

thanks google!

Thank You Google.

There comes a point in every senior’s year, where they reach the “does it really matter?” question. Commonly and fondly referred to as #senioritis.  Luckily, (I don’t know If I’d say luckily is the right word…) but I’ve had my senior thesis with the honor’s program to help me keep pushing through.  My thesis DOES matter to me.  It’s something I want to be proud of.  :)  I’ve mentioned it here and there, at quick little moments in this blog, but I decided to share more with you all. Disclaimer: I still consider it a “work in progress” I feel like this is a project I will be continuing for some time now.

What I wanted to do: Bridge my love of photography and the experiences both inside and outside of the classroom.

What I did:  I interviewed and photographed three students of different campus involvement levels at two contrasting pressure points of the semester.  Week 1 was during midterms, when stress is sky high. Week two was directly after spring break, when everyone is still calmly running around the quad barefoot.

How: I picked three girls, 1- minimally involved, 2- Actively involved, 3- Overly involved, on campus with work or extracurricular activities, and interviewed them in an environment of their choice. (Most went with their residence hall rooms)

I then asked them a series of questions about how they prioritize balance their personal, academic, self-care (mental & physical), and academic responsibilities.

I photographed all of their responses, in hopes to visually compare how their answers changed and how the stress of the semester may have physically took a tole on their bodies and their environment.

My 6 interviews acquired over 400 photos.  (WHICH WAS A LOT TO SORT THROUGH.  I was not the happiest of campers when trying to balance working on this project, along with my other classes, and role as an RA)

I am hesitant to share my research findings as concrete data, considering my sample size was only 3 students (vrs 100-200 participants) but I still think my thesis and the student’s answers are valuable :) hello areas for future research!

Here is a sneak preview: I have so many more and am working on uploading them to some sort of blog as a final product.

I hope you enjoyed a taste of my thesis! Have a great week!

So much happening, so little time!!!!

Hey everyone,

Well this is it!! The final countdown! I went to graduation rehearsal and surprisingly for the first time it is actually feeling real. It still hasn’t really sunk in that this Tuesday will be my last day of undergrad I will ever have! I know I have been writing about it for weeks but it’s just an unreal feeling. So besides feeling nostalgic, doing hours of last minute work, and fighting the senioritis I have been enjoying this amazing weather. Studying outside with iced coffee have made all the work I have to do just a little better!

I also this past weekend met up with old friends from high school and we had dinner, reminisced and made a commitment to see each other more. Especially now that we are in that statistic of college graduates.

Reunited with old friends!

Reunited with old friends!

Besides meeting old friends , I have also been spending a lot of time outside!

My Fiance aI by the lake in our backyard.

Back to talking about school because for a few more days, it is still my entire life! This past weekend I also attended breakfast with a professional. That entailed a group of speech language pathologists out in the field and they formed a panel and the students who attended got to hear all of the stories from the SLP’s and ask any questions we wanted. It was a wonderful experience and it was also a great reminder of why I got into this field. I  was definitely inspired by everyone’s stories and what they had to share! Also next week a group from ASL club including myself will be going to Washington DC to visit Gallaudet University. Gallaudet was a college started for Deaf individuals and it has a lot of history! We have a tour scheduled the first day and the second day we are going to spend seeing the area around the college. I can’t wait to see the campus and it is a great way to wind down the end of classes along with the NSSLHA banquet this Monday which I am also really excited for! Speaking of the end of classes, this is what seniors do in Speech Science on the second to last class. Yeah, we are excited!

Yesterday, the day we were waiting for – May Day! – went off with huge success. The rally followed many others taking place across the country in celebration of International Workers’ Day, continuing the fight for the best working conditions in higher education and beyond. We had great attendance, sustained for a solid hour by incredible speakers discussing adjunct compensation & job security, lecturer workload, student & union activism, the WGS program, Family Leave provisions, immigration reform, diversity, and so much more. All of these topics and more center on us as students and future workers, our higher education experience and beyond. Absolutely loved it! Want to find more updates throughout the year? I discussed it a bit last week, accompanied with a flyer, and about my worries promoting the event. The day of, that worry dimmed in comparison to my MC responsibilities. I hosted! I had my list of speakers, giving them introductions and whatnot, adding praise and my own two cents all around. Although I did public speaking since freshman year of high school, I’ve never quite gotten the hang of effective delivery and timing. I constantly worried about how I would be perceived, and that fear diminished my bravado and confidence. At the rally, I simply just went with the flow, rehearsed nothing and let my proud self shine. At least I got plenty of compliments on my MCing which made my day.

When I told one of my friends that I MCed the rally that night, it was the first time she smiled – and really bright – at our family dinner. As finals approach, we’re all pretty beat and exhausted, but everyone at family dinner knew how crazy it was that I effectively spoke in short spurts and engaged the audience between incredible speakers. Most of them were on the same RHSA Executive Board with me last year, and knew about my difficulty keeping my speeches clear and concise (why it’s become an inside joke between us). Still on the adrenaline rush of my event, with the red UUP hat on my head and Mayday $5K button on my chest, I could not hold back my overwhelming delight at the response. These people were always there for me, and now they’ve seen me grow.

End of April 045On a special note, although the school sells class rings to graduating seniors (in coordination with an outside company), I wanted to buy a less expensive, personal ring found in New Paltz and with a symbolic connection to this thriving community. The chance came the day before the rally. I passed by a table in the Lecture Center, where one of the local sororities hosted a jewelry maker, Aggie Keith (Coconut Row). A blue crystal ring caught my eye, but turned out too big. The woman said she makes jewelry on the spot, fitting one into a ring or wrist size and then crafting the accessory from there. She sized me (3 1/2 inches on my ring finger; yes, I am that small) and went to work, choosing a turquoise stone, wrapped with stainless steel. Not only is turquoise close to New Paltz colors (blue), but it’s also my birthstone (December & Sagittarius). Within the cracks of the stone, one could also see bits of orange, the other New Paltz color. Small, classy, and hand-crafted; I successfully found my “class ring.”

Also, these past two days were elections for Student Association, the largest organization representing the full student population through academics, clubs, food services, etc etc. I’ve linked you to their page before, but you can learn more about them at newpaltz.edu/sa. Elections are pretty important at the end of the year because they not only determine who will be in the Student Senate, which is a small governing body modeling the US Senate and other senatorial offices, but also the Executive Board of Student Association, which organizes the Senate and many other bodies under SA that carry out governmental and programming functions. As a campaigning strategy, Upstate Rubdown (you know how much I love them!) played in Old Main Quad today to promote one of their singers, Mary Bacorn, in her Executive VP election. I caught them on video, and I’ll close with “Soothe Me.” Enjoy!

The Week of Good Deeds and SUNSHINE!

CYBERLAND.

I hope you have been enjoying the sunshine as much as New Paltz!

Free events galore!  We had a farmers market on Old Main Quad, free t-shirt dying with Relay for Life on Parker Quad, an Earth Day event with live music on Hasbrouck quad, and the Student Art Alliance had free button making!  These events are awesome, but can be a little dangerous if you are avoiding your work. I recommend buckling down on work in the morning or night so you can enjoy your afternoon ;)

Here's a few most of the group warming up before our show!

The Sexy Pitches held fundraiser!

Here’s a few of our girls warming up before our performance

My favorite part of the week???  My A Capella group held a benefit concert at The Green Palette in town!  The Green Palette is a really cool furniture store, it’s right next to moxie cupcake!  The store has live music shows and a lot of really unique merchandise!  Check it out :)

The Sexy Pitches  raised over 260$ for the Center for Safety and Change in Rockland County.  We asked for donations at the door and sold handmade earrings, necklaces, photos (mine! :D ), and knitted goods!  Here is the center’s website if you are interested in supporting! http://www.rocklandfamilyshelter.org

I am so proud of my group for organizing and setting up this event.  I think it’s very special that students can use their clubs to help others.  After the horrors of Boston, I felt so terrible and all I wanted to do was try to spread positive energy.  I love my school, but sometimes I don’t check the news enough to fully know what is happening in the world.  Our fundraiser could not have felt anymore appropriate and helped me reach out to my near by community.  <3

On another note: As my thesis presentation on tuesday morning gets closer and closer, I get more stressed and anxious.  I decided I needed to relax and just prepare, instead of worrying.  I went for a long run on the Rail Trial in town and instantly felt better.  I have been spending countless hours on my thesis, it was nice to take some personal time!  I am studying how student prioritize and balance their academic, social, physical, and self-care responsibilities.  It’s very interesting!  Check back next week for more info!  Here are a few photos from my run!  I found a farm, cows, and the most beautiful sunset view of the mountains! I love this place<3

The railtrail is beautiful!

You can catch it right in town :)

Just be sure you turn around when you get tired because it reaches over 10 miles :P

I hope you all have a wonderful week!

Opportunity and Appreciation :)

Hey readers, can you believe there is only about 3 weeks left of school??!

Yesterday, I was helping out the Dept of Admissions by talking on a panel when one of the parents of a prospective students asked

“What’s the biggest advice you would give to someone when starting college?”

College is all about opportunity. There is no harm in trying new things, if you don’t like something you just don’t do it again. College is a time to
step outside your comfort zone and experience new things:)

Every week I try to experience something new, on Wednesday, I went to an event called TRANSaction on campus. None of my friends could go so I went alone but wow was it a great event. Speakers came to talk about the transgender community and many people from all around campus went to listen. It is great that we have such a big supportive community.

Stepping out of your comfort zone can be a big deal. Never would I have imagined that I would be the President of my Hall Gov, we do such great things and it is awesome to be a leader. Yesterday was also RA Appreciation Day. Each hall gov member made a R.A a sign and a foam mailbox filled with letters from their residents. We also surprised them with a video montage at the end of their staff meeting!

I love my Crispell Cougar Family!

This Sunday is New Paltz’s big event Relay for Life, plenty of pictures next week from it. Have a great weekend everyone and go out in the April sun before finals weeks hits!!

New car, New job, New life

Hey everyone,

A lot of crazy things have happened since last week and my life has been and up and down! First the obvious stress is the end of the semester with final papers and exams literally right around the corner. Along with that I also did not get accepted to graduate school for the fall which is a major setback. I was very upset and discouraged but after being cheered up by the best friends anyone can ask for I decided to not let this year go to waste! I am applying to schools in the area to be a teacher’s assistant and I also have plans to travel in Europe and visit family. I will also not be giving up and I will reapplying to graduate school next year! Speech pathology is definitely my passion and I am not going to give up on it.

My amazing friend stopped by to bring my flowers and junk food to cheer me up!

My amazing friend stopped by to bring my flowers and junk food to cheer me up!

So on the up side, the car I had previously was a lease and the contract just ended so I traded it in and now have a brand new civic. :) Civics are my favorite and I have been driving them since I was 16. I am trying to be grateful for all the good things that have happened and focus on all the wonderful people I have in my life. That being said my fiancé and my best friend all want to plan a trip to go down south in June to visit friends that live in Florida and South Carolina! Having something fun to plan and looking forward to a good time with close friends is definitely what I need.

My last breakfast before class in my old car!! ;(

My last breakfast before class in my old car!! ;(

This upcoming week,NSSLHA is holding our end of the semester banquet where we will have guest speakers who have had laryngectomies and they will each share with us their personal stories! We also have a breakfast this Saturday morning with speech pathologists from the hudson valley. It is a chance for students to network and ask any questions they want about whats going on in the field. It will be my last two events of my undergraduate career! It still sounds crazy to say that!!!

Besides that I have just been enjoying the past two days of beautiful weather!!!! And so have my pets :)

Well thats all I’ve got for now! Time to get back to massive amounts of projects!

Note to Future Self #30: Believe in progress, no matter how slow.

So I was going to talk about something else today, but I found this fantastic article on my Facebook newsfeed last night:

gender neutral

Well, first I had to show you my awesome Pony-fied Facebook. Now let’s zoom in closer to that article:

gender neutral zoom

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, you saw that right. We now have gender-neutral housing at SUNY New Paltz. It’s minimal, only a few rooms out of a whole campus, but this is only the start. After years of fighting for this fundamental, basic need for many students outside of the gender binary, for those whose gender does not match their biological sex, we have progress.

Many of you high school students might be wondering why this is so significant. I knew that’s what I would have thought in my junior year of high school. I only started discovering my sexuality in my sophomore year of HS; what would I know about anything outside of the girl/boy gender binary? I felt perfectly fine with my body, my sex, and the gender I was labeled since birth. I didn’t need to think about it.

1038316 Towards the end of my junior year in HS, I read this book (also pictured on the side) and learned about the transgender community, at least one perspective. I cannot tell you why I picked it up; it just felt like it would be important to me, somehow. Perhaps because it fit under my HS queer discoveries. Either way, I read it for a book report and detailed it to the class. Many students picked memoirs about famous people, or racial prejudice. I think I might have been the only one to report a memoir on LGBTQ struggle, nevertheless a transgender narrative.

The next year, I learned that two of my friends identified as transgender. In one way, it just didn’t matter to me. My friends were still the same. It’s not like they suddenly said “Welp, now my entire personality is different because I am not cisgender.” I still researched a good deal to be the best support I can, and I wrote a process-analysis essay, giving important tips about what to ask and what not to ask as your transgender friend discovers their identity. It really just boiled down to one thing: be a good person.

That’s how I handled such topics ever since. And when I came to New Paltz, a few of my friends got me to go to a Queer Action Coalition meeting towards the end of my first semester. I started attending meetings since, and soon joined their Executive Board as a Public Relations Liaison. The group offered a safe space for all LGBTQ individuals to express themselves on a variety of related topics, along with inviting allies to join in fights for LGBTQ rights. One of our interests was gender-neutral housing, but the fight proved to be an uphill battle for a single club on campus without much publicized support from the Student Senate and other large campus organizations. But this would not be the end for fair housing conditions for transgender individuals.

The next year, as I joined the Executive Board of the RHSA, I couldn’t handle QAC E-board responsibilities (and often couldn’t attend weekly meetings), but I watched from afar as the group did amazing things for LGBTQ rights. In particular, the president of QAC at the time (who is quoted in the above article numerous times) spoke on what to say and what not to say to a trans-identified individual at the beginning of Transaction, a large campus program on raising awareness about the transgender community, the violence and inequality frequently faced, and discuss solutions to the injustice to the community. (The link is for the second annual event, which takes place next week). On my end, RHSA talked with the administration and the Central office about making the newest residence hall, scheduled to be built and finished by 2015, to be gender-neutral. People on multiple ends started doing research on the best layout for gender-neutral accommodations. Then they announced “gender-mixed suites,” which were an unfortunate cop-out to the issue, since those of the same biological sex still were required to live together within the suite. Not a real gender-neutral option by any means.

Perhaps due to residence hall construction delays (at least what I heard through the grapevine), gender-neutral housing has come a lot sooner than expected. And I am entirely okay with this. While several advocates are hoping first priority will be given to transgender students, and that some spaces will be reserved for first years, those are steps only possible because of the latest progress. Only regret? Not staying an extra year to see these developments. But I got to graduate, and I can believe in progress, even when I don’t see it with my own eyes, no matter how long it takes.

How much longer until graduation?!?!

Hey everyone,

This week has been jam packed with school work since the end of the semester is getting closer and closer. I feel like I haven’t done anything but think and talk about school. Any friends not in school with me is probably sick of talking to me ;) Around this time comes the last of the unit tests, end of the semester projects, preparing for finals and of course  getting everything together for graduation!!!!! As exciting as graduating college is, I am also a little sad. Another big stage of my life is gone by and coming to a close. I will no longer and never be again an undergraduate student. I am still waiting to see if I am accepted into the graduate program here at SUNY New Paltz so then I can move on into the next exciting stage of my life and reach my future career goals of becoming a speech language pathologist. The past weeks I have observed at a rehab center and at a school for students with autism. It was an excellent experience and it really solidified that this is the work I want to do for the rest of my life. I recommend observing to any student during their undergraduate career. It’s always good to get an inside look and get a feel for what the field you chose is really like.

Since this week has been so busy, I want to do nothing more this weekend then relax and watch Netflix. That being said a friend of mine and I are going to spend our whole day tomorrow watching movies and making fun food! It is quite the stress reliever let me tell you!

Also I would like to take a moment to send my prayers out to Boston and the terrible tragedies that have been occurring there these past few days. My heart goes out to everyone affected.

Thanks as always for reading

Lost in Translation

Hey everyone,

So after a gap in blogging due to loss of internet and loss of my mind I am back and a lot has happened. We will start with the most recent of events. This past weekend I went to Saratoga Springs with NSSLHA which is our campus’ Student Speech Language and Hearing Association. They funded myself and three others to go to a Speech/Audiology convention. It was a great time and they had vendors from different organizations and schools showing their latest advancements in technology for people with all different kinds of disorders. Besides the enormous amount of free pens and notebooks I also learned a lot of new things about my future career. In addition to the vendors, there were also a series of lectures that spanned throughout the three days. The lectures were taught from professionals all over the region on different topics relating to Audiology and Speech Language Pathology.

The four of us at the convention

Always time for a little fun!

Since the warm weather is approaching (FINALLY) I spent some time last week walking the rail trail in New Paltz with my best friend and her younger brother. The rail trail is a great walking trail in New Paltz. On a nice day it is definitely the place to be! I am usually so busy taking classes that I rarely get to enjoy all that New Paltz has to offer!

Rail Trail <3

Rail Trail <3

The end is almost near for my undergraduate career so my next few remaining weeks will consist of organizing all my final assignments and projects that are due in the oh so near future. I am still wait listed for a few graduate programs for the fall so my fingers are crossed that I will be able to continue to graduate school and not have to have a gap year. Gap Year=my worst nightmare. In the event I am not selected off the waiting list I will have to find a job out there in the real world and apply again next year. Besides the slight everyday panic of having to join the work force I have been drowning myself in the Boy Meets World box set on got on sale at amazon.com

:)))))

:) ))))

Also if you have the time check out this website: http://www.tobii.com/en/assistive-technology/global/products/hardware/tobii-c12/

It is the website for the Tobii C-12 which is an assistive technology for individuals who are non verbal and also do not have proper use of their hands. It is completely controlled by the individuals eyes and calibrated to their retinas. It is one of the amazing technologies I got to experience at the convention this past weekend!

What a good week!

Hi Readers! Hope you are all having a good week!

This week has been pretty good for me–there has been a lot of exciting things going on recently. I finally finished a ton of papers and tests in my classes and finally have a few moments to unwind – something that doesn’t happen too often!

This past weekend was an awesome one. On Friday night, my RA Staff and I went to the Hudson Valley Leadership Gala – an event for student leaders from SUNY New Paltz, Marist College and Mount Saint Mary College. It was so cool seeing RAs and other kinds of student leaders from all over the area. Here is a picture from that night (and yes, we wore New Paltz colors!)

12412_10151628190388968_943567011_n

On Saturday was the event I, as well as my fellow Epic-Glee members, have been waiting for – our invitational! We had our new friends from SUNY Oswego come – from a group called Vocal Effect, a show choir just like us. It was so great performing and hanging out with them. We had a great time!! On the bottom is a picture of all three groups; because, we also had Melodia and Movement – a new bilingual singing group on campus perform – and they were so great as well. Also, here are some videos from the night of my group, Epic-Glee: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vXm3LAe46Uk and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nXBOuhLtS4A.

Hope you all have a great weekend and prospective students –  stop by our Accepted Students Day TOMORROW on campus! There will be different events going on all day and I will be working the event and performing with Glee in the morning! Make sure you look for me with the tan New Paltz jacket and stop and say hi if you do! :)
